Basic Skills in Comic Dialogue 相声的基本功

Naturally,Xiangsheng(comic dialogue) performers traditionally have trained skills including telling, imitation, amusing and singing. SinceXiangshengis an art of language, and the techniques of handling language and voice are quite important. Therefore, the four basic skills seem essential to Xiangsheng performers.
Telling refers to the handling of jokes, twisters, two-part allegorical sayings and so on. It requires the performers to have an articulate pronunciation and a fluent speech. Imitation means that the performers should be good at imitating human voice and sound of other objects as well as sound effects, including various kinds of gastriloquy, dialects, hucksters' voice, arias in traditional operas, and facial expressions and folk customs of different characters, old and young, male and female. Amusing means that Xiangsheng of whatever form is supposed to amuse the audience and hopefully make them laugh. Therefore, every sketch, no matter how artistic, must contain at least one gag funny enough to make the audience roll around in laughter. Singing requires the performers to have a good voice and can sing different arias in traditional operas and popular tunes.
Telling, imitation, amusing and singing are the foundation of Xiangsheng performance, and every Xiangsheng performer should master the skills. However, in actual performances, different performers have their strong points, and feature different styles.

Name of Chinese 中国人的姓名

The full name of a Han Chinese is composed of two parts: the surname and the given name, while the opposite of the arrangement of names is widely practiced in many other countries outsideAsia.

Today, there are more than 8,000 Chinese surnames, of which 3,000 surnames are used by the Han Chinese. Among these names, Li, Wang and Zhang are the most commonly heard, given to about 250 million Chinese.

The surname is generally composed of one character or syllable, such as Zhang, Wang, Li, or Zhao, among which Li is the most popular. There are also two-syllable surnames, or compound surnames, such as Ouyang, Zhuge, Sima and Gongsun.

A given name is usually two words but also can consist of just one syllable. A full Chinese name always has two or three characters, but can also have four if there is both a compound surname and two-syllable given name. Since ancient time, a one-syllable surname and two-syllable given name has been the norm in China.

Traditionally, a Chinese surname is often passed down through the father. Now,Chinese women always retain their family name even after marriage ,but they couldn't in ancient time.

Agricultural of China

Basic China中国背景知识(1)
Agricultural of China中国的农业

China has a large population but little arable land. With only seven percent of the world's cultivated land, China has to feed one fifth of the world's population. China's agriculture, therefore, is an important issue that attracts worldwide attention. Some foreigners once raised the question: "Who will feed China?" "We Chinese will feed ourselves!" replied China's leaders and agriculture experts.
Chinese agriculture has developed rapidly since reform in rural areas began in 1978. The major reforms were: the household responsibility system with remuneration linked to output, which restored to farmers the right to use land, arrange farm work, and dispose of their output; canceling the state monopoly on purchase and marketing of agricultural products, and price restrictions on most agricultural and ancillary products; abolishing many restrictive policies, allowing farmers to develop a diversified economy in rural areas and run township enterprises so as to fire their enthusiasm for production. The reforms emancipated and developed rural productive forces, promoted the rapid growth of agriculture, particularly in grain production, and the continuous optimization of agricultural structure. The achievements have been remarkable. China now leads the world in output of grain, cotton, oil-bearing crops, fruit, meat, eggs, aquatic products and vegetables.

With the continuous growth, agricultural products have shown a clear increase in output per capita. In 2005, grain output per capita was 371 kilograms, and per capita figures for meat (pork, beef and mutton), milk, and aquatic products were above world averages, reaching 47.2 kg, 21.1 kg and 39.2 kg, respectively.
In 2004, the Chinese government put into effect the policy of reducing or exempting agriculture taxes. At the end of 2005, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress decided to abolish agriculture taxes statutes that have been in effect of some 50 years. The objective of this measure is to reduce farmers' burdens, enhance basic agriculture and shrink the gap between urban and rural areas.

China urges swine flu prevention education in schools

The Chinese government Wednesday called for schools nationwide to teach students about the swine flu and its prevention.
The campaigns should be launched as soon as possible, in all schools, to raise awareness of prevention and avoid causing unnecessary panic among teachers and students, according to a circular jointly issued by the ministries of education and health.
Schools should emphasize teaching students to develop good hygiene habits, such as avoiding contact with people with flu symptoms and crowded places, frequently washing hands with soap and fresh water, and covering the mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
"Students in rural areas should avoid contact with pigs or pig farms," it said.
The circular asked educational administrative departments and all schools to increase efforts to keep campuses clean and well-ventilated .
"Schools, those in rural areas in particular, must strengthen management if any pigs are raised within campuses," it said.
The circular stressed that all school cafeterias should make sure pork is cooked thoroughly.
Hygiene administrative departments and disease control and prevention centers should promptly report suspected cases of the disease, it said.
China has no reported swine flu cases, but the possibility should not be ruled out as the swine flu is already spreading in some countries.
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing.

Genesis of Chinese Numbers

In the history, there are some different sayings about the genesis of Chinese numbers.
Modern scholar Guo Moruo thought that ancient people used fingers to indicate numbers and thus Chinese numbers gradually came into being. Chinese numbers are pictographs: one (), two (), three (), four (), five () ……
Similar to numbers in other languages, Chinese numbers were originated from primitive counting activities of the Han nationality. In ancient China, people also used conches, knots of chord, bamboo, wood and so on as counting tools. Numbers written inJiaguwen(scripts on tortoise shells and animal bones) show chord knotting in primitive counting.
The Chinese numbers of from one to ten, hundred (), thousand (), ten thousand () were evolved from the above-mentionedJiaguwen. With increase of knowledge and development of thinking of ancient people, the number of Chinese numbers kept increasing such as 100 million (), mega- () and so on.
Arabic numerals were induced into China in about the 13th century but it was not until the early 20thcentury that they were widely adopted in people's cultural life.

Tai Ji Quan

Tai Ji Quan is a major division of Chinese martial art. Literally, Tai Ji Quan means "supreme ultimate fist"; Tai means "supreme", Ji means "ultimate", and Quan means "fist."
Tai Ji Quan has its philosophical roots in Taoism and is considered an internal martial art, utilizing internal energy, or Qi, and following the simple principle of "subduing the vigorous by the soft". Taoism is the oldest philosophy in China which is represented by the famous symbol of Yin and Yang which expresses the continuous flow of Qi in a circular motion that generates two opposite forces, plus and minus, which interact and balance each other to bring existence to the physical and metaphysical world.

Introduction of Chinese instrument --guqin

Playing the guqin is at the top of four skills required of every man of letters, which also includes playing I-go, and creating calligraphy and painting. Confucius is said to have been a guqin composer.

Guqin is also called the seven-stringed qin. The body is a long and narrow sound box made of wood. Generally speaking, it is 130 cm long, 20 cm wide and 5 cm thick. The surface is generally made of paulownia wood or China fir, and has seven strings stretched along it. On the edges are 13 inlaid jade markers. Catalpa wood is used for the base, and there are two holes, one big and one small (called the "phoenix pool" and "dragon pond,",respectively) to emit the sound. The fingering techniques are known as recital, rubbing, plucking, concentration, floating notes and harmonious notes (same measure, five measure and octave). The instrument is rich in tone color, with airy, floating notes, and simple and solid scattered notes.
